The Boom Cards found on OTDocShop are designed to help students develop visual perception skills and learn basic typing skills necessary for success in a highly technical world!
Visual perception is the process of making sense of what is seen.
There are eight components of visual perception that are used together and in coordination with each other in order to complete everyday tasks.
At school, students need these skills to navigate the school environment, trace lines and shapes, copy letters and numbers, read, write legibly, cut on a line, and complete math calculations.
The Practice Skills decks provide students with the opportunity to practice and develop five components of visual perception.
figure ground (the ability to see the important information from a crowded background)
visual discrimination (the ability to see differences with letters/shapes)
form constancy (recognizing a letter/shape is the same no matter it's position)
eye-hand coordination (using the eyes and hand together to complete a task)
visual motor integration (making sense of what is seen and then using it to perform a task)
In this deck, letters are presented on different shapes and there is a card for each letter of the alphabet. Students practice identifying the three letters that are the same out of a group of four.
In this deck, students practice matching the letters of their name and then putting the letters in the correct sequence. Each deck is created for one specific name.
In this deck, students practice matching each picture to the square with the same picture. The cards begin with 3 images to match and progress to 6 images to match.
In this deck, students practice matching shapes and then use the shapes to build a person.
In these decks, students practice locating a specific letter within a large group of letters and then place that letter in the soup bowl. There is one card for each letter of the alphabet.
In this deck, students practice locating individual letters and correctly placing them on the keyboard. The letters are presented in upper and lower case.
In this deck, students practice sorting letters/numbers that my get reversed or confused and then use the letter/number correctly to form a word or sequence.
In this deck, students practice spelling 30 Dolch Sight Words by dragging the letters to the box to spell the word correctly. The list of words can be found on Boom Learning. There are 3 sight word decks.
The Typing Basics program is a different way to teach typing and keyboarding skills to students and is not intended to replace learning the "traditional" typing technique. Instead, it teaches students foundational 2-handed typing without focusing on using the correct fingers to type corresponding letters. The Typing Basics program is designed for students of all ages and abilities.
The program teaches 2-handed typing by using "blue" and "yellow" hands. The "blue" (left) hand types the letters on the left side of the keyboard and the "yellow" (right) hand types the letters on the right side of the keyboard.
The first four Typing Basics decks are the foundation of the program (Levels 1-4). In Level 1, students are introduced to the blue and yellow hands and practice typing each letter of the alphabet using the correct hand. In Levels 2 and 3, students practice typing words using either their blue or yellow hand. In Level 4, students use both hands to type each word and each letter in the word is either blue or yellow indicating which hand should be used to type the letter.
Once Levels 1-4 are are completed, explore Practice Words, Spacebar, Shift Keys, and Punctuation!
In the Level 1 deck, students practice typing each letter of the alphabet using either their left (blue) hand or right (yellow) hand.
In the Level 2 and 3 decks, students practice typing simple words using only their left (blue) hand or right (yellow) hand.
In the Level 4 deck, students practice using both hands to type each word and each letter is either blue or yellow indicating which hand to use.
Boom Cards are gamified digital task cards hosted on the Boom Learning platform that can be played on a tablet, computer, or an interactive whiteboard as long as there is an internet connection.
Students complete each card by following simple instructions to touch, click, or type a response and get immediate feedback for correct and incorrect responses. With correct responses, students advance to the next card.
Boom Cards are sold in "Decks" that include several cards that provide repeated practice addressing specific skills.
Boom Decks can only be purchased on the Boom Learning website.
It is free to join Boom Learning and once a deck is purchased it can be shared with multiple students at one time.
